Macaitis-Smith drives in three as Boxers, Cavaliers split

PORTLAND, Ore. —  Katelyn Macaitis-Smith drove drove in three runs on the day, while Ashley Martin picked up her first collegiate victory as Pacific split a non-conference twin bill with Concordia at Porter Park on Saturday.

Pacific topped the Division II Cavaliers 5-1 in game one, while game two saw the Boxers drop a 3-2 decision in eight innings.

The Boxers open Northwest Conference play on February 25 with a noon first pitch scheduled in Tacoma, Wash., against Pacific Lutheran.

Game One: Pacific 5, Concordia 1
Martin (Sutherlin, Ore.) tossed a complete game to earn her first college win, while Macaitis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) drove in two runs as Pacific recorded a game one road victory over host Concordia.

Concordia scored its lone run in the bottom of the second inning, but Pacific answered almost instantly in the top of the third with four runs.

Becca Bernard (Roseville, Calif.) reached on a bunt single with one out, before a fielders choice allowed Bernard to reach second and Kaitlynn Donaca (Oregon City, Ore.) to reach first safely. Cindy Chan (Torrance, Calif.) followed with a RBI double to left field, scoring Bernard. Macaitis-Smith added to the scoreline with a two-run single to right center.

After reaching second on a ground out, Macaitis-Smith stole third and scored on a fielding error to wrap up the third inning scoring for Pacific.

Te Boxers added to their 4-1 lead in the fourth when Morgan Bookout (Oregon City, Ore.) drew a four-pitch walk to lead off the frame. Lola Kolehmainen (Fresno, Calif.) pinch ran for Bookout and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trisha Snydar (Lynden, Wash.). Bernard delivered another bunt single to load the bases, allowing Donaca to drive Kolehmainen in on a fielders choice.

Kolehmainen's run was the final score of the opening game and allowed the Boxers to pick-up the 5-1 road victory.

Martin struck out two Cavaliers in the victory, while scattering eight hits and surrendering a lone run. Chan, Bernard and Macaitis-Smith all finished the opening game with two hits each.

Game Two: Concordia 3, Pacific 2 (8 inn.)
Pacific pitchers, Cassie Apple (Modesto, Calif.) and Morgan Masters (Tenino, Wash.), struck out a combined seven batters as the Boxers fell in extra innings to Concordia in game two of Saturday's twin bill.

Concordia scored one run in the first and second inning, while Pacific posted a pair of runs to the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.

Caitlyn Ramiscal (Kapolei, Hawaii) delivered a bunt single and headed to second on a single to center by Chan. Donaca loaded the bases with an infield single before Macaitis-Smith singled to right to plate Ramiscal.

Amanda Machado (Folsom, Calif.) drove in the game tying run with a single to center. Donaca's run tied the ballgame at 2-2 before a double play ended the frame for the Boxers.

A scoreless seventh inning was followed by a scoreless top half of the eight. Concordia loaded the bases in the eighth, where Mckenzie Smith singled through the left side to help plate the winning run for the Cavaliers.

Six Boxers recorded one hit in game two of Saturday's two-game set.

Apple struck out three in three innings, while Masters sat down four in 4.2 innings of work.
