Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

After seeing late goal waved off, Boxers win it in OT

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — After seeing what looked like the game winning goal by Lucy Almao waved off in the dying seconds of regulation, newly-minted captain April Lanz netted the overtime sudden victory goal for Pacific and earned the Boxers a 9-8 win over Carthage.

The Lady Reds opened the scoring five minutes into the first period, but Lanz tallied back-to-back goals to strike back over a one-minute span. With the Boxers leading 2-1 following a pair of Lanz goals, Dakota Dantzer (Murrieta, Calif.) controlled the ensuing draw and saw the Boxers march into the offensive third.

Jordyn Godfrey (Burnt Hills, N.Y.) drew a foul at the 20:56 mark and converted the free position shot and gave Pacific a two-goal advantage.

Carthage responded with two-straight goals its own entering the final 14 minutes of the first half.

Meg Chapman (Woodinville, Wash.) caused a Lady Reds turnover and picked up the ground ball, which led to a successful clearance by the Boxers. Godfrey again drew a free position opportunity and converted to put the Boxers up 4-3.

Carthage responded quickly by tying the game at 4-4 with a goal less than a minute after Godfrey's. The Lady Reds wrapped up the first period with three-straight goals to take a 6-4 lead into the second half.

After nearly six minutes of scoreless lacrosse to open the second half, Kenedie Hemrich (Murrieta, Calif.) broke the drought with her second goal of the season to pull Pacific within one of the visitors.

The Lady Reds regained a two-goal advantage with 22:35 left in regulation on a free position goal.

A 13-minute scoreless drought followed Carthage's seventh goal when the Lady Reds tallied their eighth of the night and extended the lead to 8-5 in their favor. Godfrey snagged the ensuing draw and helped set up the Boxers for another goal as Paisley Hiefield (Portland, Ore.) assisted on a Roya Tamassebi (Mountain View, Calif.) goal with 8:41 left in regulation.

Carthage looked to pick-up an insurance goal with 6:04 on the clock, but an illegal stick on a would-be goal gave the ball back to the Boxers. Nearly a minute after the illegal stick call, Lanz picked up an assist on a goal from Hiefield that pulled Pacific within one of Carthage at 8-7.

Hiefield caused a turnover after the draw, which was picked up by Tahmassebi. Roughly 20 seconds after Tahmassebi's ground ball pickup, Lanz was able to find the back of the net, tying the game at 8-8 with less than five minutes remaining in regulation.

After a period of back-and-forth possession, Hiefield drew a free position and saw her shot bounce high of the goal. The Boxers retained possession as Lucy Almao (Orange County, Calif.) made a move toward goal and beat the Carthage goalkeeeper for what looked like the game winning goal with 39 seconds remaining.

Almao's goal was waved off due to an illegal stick, and the two sides headed to overtime.

Over two minutes into the sudden victory first overtime period, Lanz found herself in-front of the goal mouth and tallied a game winner, for her 17th goal of the season.

Lanz led all scorers with four goals, while joining Hiefield in the assist column with one on the night. Hiefield led all players with seven ground ball pickups. On the draw, Lanz controlled five draws fort he Boxers.

Defensively, Hiefield finished the night with six caused turnovers while Chapman finished with four.

In goal, Adrienne Salzwedel (Beaverton, Ore.) recorded five saves in the victory.

Pacific next heads to Texas for a March 28 game against Dallas. Pacific's visit to Dallas will be the first of six-straight road games for the Boxers.
