Boxers earn Saturday split with Pirates

FOREST GROVE — Katelyn Macaitis-Smith hit the first home run of her collegiate career to lead Pacific to a Saturday split with the visiting Whitworth Pirates at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.

The Boxers topped the Pirates 1-0 in game one, before falling 3-0 in game two.

Pacific and Whitworth are scheduled to meet again on Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for noon.

GAME ONE: Pacific 1, Whitworth 0
A solo home run in the bottom of the first was all Pacific needed offensively as Macaitis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) delivered a solo home run to earn the Boxers a game one victory.

After Ashley Martin (Sutherlin, Ore.) sat the Pirates down in order in the top of the first, with two outs in the bottom of the frame Macaitis-Smith ripped a 1-2 pitch over the left field wall for her first home run as a Boxer.

Martin tossed three-straight perfect innings before giving up Whitworth's first hit of the game in the top of the fourth.

Pacific threatened to add a few insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, but a fielders choice closed out the Boxers' chance with the bases loaded.

Macaitis-Smith was the lone player on the field with multiple hits as she finished the day 2-3 at the plate.

Cindy Chan (Torrance, Calif.), Haley Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) and Morgan Bookout (Oregon City, Ore.) all finished with a hit each.

In the circle, Martin tossed seven shutout innings, while surrendering just two hits and striking out two Pirates.

GAME TWO: Whitworth 3, Pacific 0
Trisha Snydar (Lynden, Wash.) recorded two hits, while Cassie Apple (Modesto, Calif.) struck out three in the Boxers' game two loss.

After Apple shut down the Pirates in-order to open the first inning, Pacific threatened in the first when Macaitis-Smith advanced to second on a wild pitch, but a 10-minute rain delay cut off the Boxers' early momentum before the first inning came to a close.

Whitworth struck for one run in both the third and fourth innings, before adding the third and final tally in the top of the sixth.
