Boxers finish win over Lutes, fall in game two

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific softball team completed a road victory over Pacific Lutheran that began a month ago, before falling in game two of the scheduled double header at PLU Field on Thursday.

After seeing game one suspended on February 26, the Boxers finished out a 5-1 victory over the Lutes in game one but fell 9-8 in game two.

Pacific returns to its originally set schedule on Saturday with a noon first pitch scheduled at George Fox.

GAME ONE: Pacific 5, Pacific Lutheran 1
A pair of Boxers recorded multi-hit games, while Amanda Machado (Folsom, Calif.) ripped her second home run of the season in the Boxers' game one victory over the Lutes.

Back in February, the Boxers opened the scoring in the top of the second when Haley Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) singled to short and advanced to second on a Machado walk. Morgan Bookout (Oregon City, Ore.) sacrificed Kodama to third and Machado to second, where the two would stay put as the Lutes recorded the second out of the frame.

Kaitlynn Donaca (Oregon City, Ore.) doubled down the left field line, scoring Kodama and Machado. Donaca scampered home when Katelyn Macaitis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) singled up the middle for the Boxers' third run of the game.

The Boxers added two more runs in the top of the third when Madi Hedlund (Kirkland, Wash.) singled up the middle with one out. Hedlund would soon score on a two-out home run by Machado.

Pacific Lutheran scored in the bottom of the third for the final run of the game.

Due to rain, the game was delayed and then suspended on February 26 in the top of the sixth inning, before getting back underway on March 30. The two sides combined for two hits in the final two innings of play.

Macaitis-Smith and Donaca both notched two-hits, while Machado and Donaca drove in two runs each.

Ashley Martin (Sutherlin, Ore.) struck out four in seven innings of work.

GAME TWO: Pacific Lutheran 9, Pacific 8
Three Boxers posted multi-hit performances, while Donaca drove in two runs in a game two loss on Thursday afternoon.

Pacific posted a six-run inning in the top of the third, when Becca Bernard (Roseville, Calif.) began the inning with a single. A one-out single by Cindy Chan (Torrance, Calif.). A bunt single from Kodama loaded the bases, while an error on a fielders choice scored Bernard and saw Macaitis-Smith reach safely.

The Boxers' next run was plated when Hedlund drove in Chan with a single up the middle. Bookout drove in Kodama with a single, while Machado scored Macaitis-Smith with a single of her own. Kiara McGinnis (Chicago Park, Calif.) pinch hit and drove in Bookout and Machado to give the Boxers a 6-0 lead in the top of the third.

The Lutes answered with two runs in the bottom of the third, and plated two more in the fifth to pull within two of the Boxers.

A five-run sixth gave PLU a 9-6 lead entering the final scheduled frame.

Pacific looked to battle back in the top of the seventh, when Kailey Frazier (Albany, Ore.) reached on an error before being pinch run for by Lola Kolehmainen (Fresno, Calif.). Trisha Snydar (Lynden, Wash.) singled to right before advancing to second, while Kolehmainen moved to third, on a Pacific groundout. Donaca pinch hit and drove in a pair with a single to right center before the final out of the game was recorded one batter later.
