Bernard picks up four hits; Boxers fall twice to Loggers

HILLSBORO, Ore. — Becca Bernard finished the day with four hits, while the visiting Puget Sound Loggers picked up two wins as the Boxers and Loggers battled in the rain at Hillsboro Stadium on Saturday evening.

Puget Sound topped Pacific 5-2 in nine innings during game one, before earning a 6-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Boxers and Loggers are scheduled to meet on Sunday at 1 p.m., with the doubleheader set to take place at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.

GAME ONE: Puget Sound 5, Pacific 2 (9 inn.)
Bernard (Roseville, Calif.) had three of Pacific's four hits in the opener, which featured a rain delay of an hour and a minute in the top of the fourth inning.

Pacific opened the scoring when Katelyn Macaitis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) doubled to right to lead off the bottom of the first for the Boxers. On a 2-2 count, Bernard doubled down the left field line to advance Macaitis-Smith to third. Cindy Chan (Torrance, Calif.) would plate Macaitis-Smith with a sacrifice fly to right field, which also allowed Bernard to reach third safely.

The second and final run of the game for Pacific came as Bernard scored on a sac fly to right by Amanda Machado (Folsom, Calif.).

Puget Sound plated two runs in the fourth, before the rain delay, on a two-run homer by Kaitlyn Webster. The rain became heavy after Webster's homer and a delay began at 4 p.m.

Play resumed at 5:01 p.m., where Ashley Martin (Sutherlin, Ore.) returned to the circle and struck out the final out of the fourth inning.

The Loggers scored three in the ninth inning to secure the 5-2 win over the Boxers.

Martin finished the opening game with seven strikeouts.

GAME TWO: Puget Sound 6, Pacific 4
Haley Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) delivered two hits and two RBI as the Boxers dropped the second game of the double header at a neutral site to the Loggers.

Puget Sound scored in the opening inning, but the Boxers were set to answer when Macaitis-Smith doubled to center to lead off the game. Bernard dropped down a bunt single, allowing Macaitis-Smith to advance to third. The Boxers first run of the ball game came when Chan delivered an infield single, and Macaitis-Smith was able to score when the Loggers' defense made an error recovering the ball after Chan's single.

The Loggers answered with two runs in the second, and a single score in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth.

With Chan on first and one out, Machado singled up the middle before Morgan Bookout (Oregon City, Ore.) grounded out. Bookout's groundout allowed Chan and Machado to advance into scoring position, where they would score when Kodama doubled to right center to plate a pair of runs.

Puget Sound again answered with two runs in the sixth, while Pacific scored a fourth and final run in the bottom half of the inning when Emily Peters (Forest Grove, Ore.) scored on a singled to center by Chan.

Morgan Masters (Tenino, Wash.) and Cassie Apple (Modesto, Calif.) combined for five strikeouts in game two of the doubleheader.
