Boxers Loses Series Final to George Fox

George Fox scored twice in the 11th inning without a hit to come away with a 7-5 win over the Pacific University baseball team on Monday.

The Boxers (8-7, 3-6 NWC) left 13 runners on base in the contest including two in the bottom half of the 11th. Pacific junior Dylan Wright (pictured; Gilbert, Ariz.) had a season-high and tied a career-high with four hits and sophomore Brandon Henderson (Pearl City, Hawaii) added three to lead a 12-hit attack for the Boxers.

The Bruins (5-9, 4-5 NWC) rallied from a 3-1 deficit to score four times in the eighth to go ahead 5-3. The patient visitors drew five walks in the 11th inning, plus picked up a key sacrifice bunt advance runners for the come-from-behind win. Eight-different players for George Fox reached on a walk to complement a nine-hit effort for the Bruins. Alex Jondal pitched the final 2.1 innings of one-hit relief for the win.

Pacific scored a run each in the first two innings for an early 2-0 lead and stretched the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth. In the winning with two out, Wright singled up the middle for his second hit of the contest. Then, he stole second to move into scoring position. Next, Henderson brought him in with a RBI single for a two-run lead in favor of the Boxers. The Boxers' starting pitcher junior Brady O'Keefe (Tacoma, Wash.) reached the eighth inning but was not involved in the decision.

In the eighth, with one out, the Bruins loaded the bases against a pair of Pacific relievers. Matthew Ramirez came off the bench for the visitors and tied the contest at 3 with a two-RBI single up the middle. Back-to-back RBI singles by the Bruins put the visitors ahead for the first time on the day with a 5-3 lead.

A resilient Pacific squad scored a run each in the eighth and ninth to force extra innings. The Bruins stranded the bases loaded in its half of the tenth and the Boxers left a runner on second in its half of the inning. The Bruins managed to score twice in the 11th for the difference in the game. A double play halted a late rally by the Boxers in its half of the inning, despite having runners on second and third later in the inning.

Next, Pacific will travel to Parkland, Wash. to face Pacific Lutheran for a three-game series. The three-game series gets underway on Saturday, Mar. 11 with a doubleheader.
