Bookout triple helps Boxers to 9-1 win over Loggers

FOREST GROVE — Morgan Bookout ripped a two-run triple in the fifth, while Haley Kodama drove in two runs on a walk-off double to earn Pacific a 9-1 victory over Puget Sound in a resumption of a previously suspended game from March at Sherman/Larkins Stadium.

Back on March 5 the Boxers opened the scoring in the bottom of the first when Becca Bernard (Roseville, Calif.) reached on an infield single and stole second, only to score a few pitches later when Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) doubled down the right field line.

With play resumed on April 11, the Boxers got a couple more runs in the bottom of the third after Emily Peters (Forest Grove, Ore.) dropped down a bunt single to lead off the frame. Bernard moved Peters to second with an infield single of her own, which was followed by a fielders choice by Kodama that saw Peters forced out at third.

The Loggers attempted to throw Kodama out across the diamond at first, but an errant throw allowed Bernard to circle the bases and score and let Kodoma reach third safely. With Kodama on third, Amanda Machado (Folsom, Calif.) singled to left field and gave the Boxers a 3-0 lead heading into the fourth.

Pacific continued to score in odd numbered innings with a four-run fifth thanks to a two-run double to right center by Machado that scored Katelyn Macaitis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) and Kodama.

After Cindy Chan (Torrance, Calif.) was hit by a pitch, Bookout (Oregon City, Ore.) ripped a triple to center that scored Machado and Chan.

The Loggers posted one run in the top of the sixth when Jessica Gott doubled to left and scored on an error by the Boxers.

Pacific ended the game early in the sixth inning when Peters single dup the middle and Bernard laid down a perfect bunt single, followed by a double to center field by Kodama to earn Pacific a 9-1 run-rule victory in the sixth.

Bernard was 3-4 in the game with three runs scored, while Machado and Kodama both finished with two hits. Kodama drove in three runs, Machado added two RBI and Bookout drove in a pair as well.

Peters and Bookout both finished with two hits each in the win.

The Boxers wrap up their 2017 home schedule on Friday with a doubleheader against Willamette that is currently scheduled for a noon first pitch.
