In the final home match of the 2017 season, the Pacific University women's tennis defeated Whitworth, 5-4 on Friday in Forest Grove.
The Boxers (5-8, 3-7 NWC) started the day, recognizing Kaitlyn Lomartire (Portland, Ore.) and Danielle du Plooy (Cape Town, South Africa), who were playing their final home matches of their career. The duo came together for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles and Chantelle Baclay (Lahaina, Hawaii) and Marissa Hayashi (Hilo, Hawaii) won 8-2 at No. 3 to put Pacific ahead 2-1 after doubles.
Lomartire avenged a loss earlier in the season to Bella Hoyos with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles. The next singles win for Pacific came at No. 3 from Baclay, who was a 7-5, 6-3 winner over Jennifer Adams.
The Boxers – who are ranked No. 18 in the latest ITA/Oracle West Region rankings – needed just one more win in singles to secure the victory over the Pirates, who had defeated Pacific by an 8-1 margin on Mar. 4. Wins by Whitworth at No. 2, 4 and 5 tied the match at 4 with it being decided at No. 5 singles.
The Boxers' Marissa Hayashi came back from a 1-6 deficit to win the next two sets by a 6-2, 6-3 margin to secure the win.
Next, Pacific will face Willamette on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. in Salem.
