After starting its West Coast road trip with a 16-3 rout on Friday night over Occidental, the Pacific University baseball team dropped a doubleheader to the Tigers, 4-3 and 4-1 on Saturday in Los Angeles.
Game 1
The Boxers (12-17) cut the deficit to one, scoring three runs on two hits in the third inning. No more runs came across the scoreboard but the Boxers stranded five base runners in the final seven innings. Twice, Pacific had runners picked off base to end threats.
Dustin Meyer had two of the seven hits to lead the Boxers and
Cole Kanazawa, in relief of starter
Paul Wolfram, pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief. Wolfram, who was the tough-luck loser, allowed six hits and struck out five in the loss to fall to 4-5.
Occidental (20-9) had just six hits from six-different players in the win. The Tigers went ahead 4-0 in the bottom of the second inning, capitalizing on a pair of Pacific errors and four hits. Starting pitcher Nolan McCarthy improved to 3-2, allowing six hits and striking out five and Riley James picked up the save after three innings of one-hit relief.
Game 2
Occidental scored the last three runs of the game, following a 1-1 tie to defeat Pacific by a 4-1 margin in the nightcap.
The Boxers tied the game at 1 in the top of the fourth inning on a RBI double by Meyer, who was thrown out at third in an attempt to make it a triple. Earlier in the inning, with one out,
Shane Suyama doubled to left field. Suyama had two of the five hits to lead Pacific and starting pitcher
Brady O'Keefe went 6.2 innings, scattering six hits and striking out four in the loss.
For the second-straight game, Occidental was limited to six hits by a pair of Pacific pitchers. The top four in the Tigers' lineup combined for four hits and three RBI – all three came from Devon DeRaad.
The Boxers end the West Coast trip with a game on Sunday against No. 27 Chapman in Orange, Calif. at 11 a.m.
