SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — An own goal in the 49th minute doomed the Pacific men's soccer team in the Boxers' season opener at the UCSC Soccer Complex against the Berry Vikings.
Berry (1-0-0) followed a low-offense opening period, which saw the two teams combine for five shots and zero shots on goal, by drawing a corner kick in the 48th minute that led to an own goal off of the Boxers' (0-1-0) set-piece defense.
The two sides combined for a lone shot on goal in the match.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN... The Vikings pushed toward goal in the early minutes of the second period and drew a corner kick in the 48th minute. The Vikings' corner resulted in an own goal and proved the lone goal on the day.
STAT OF THE GAME... Two Boxers made their collegiate debut on Friday, as freshmen
James Curro (Anchorage, Alaska) and
Braden Kojima (Kamuela, Hawaii) played 69 and 33 minutes, respectively.
NEXT UP... Pacific continues its trip to Santa Cruz with a Sunday meeting against the Milwaukee School of Engineering Raiders. Kickoff is scheduled for noon at the UCSC Soccer Complex.
