Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Kimball brace snags Boxers first win at Whitworth in 19 years

SPOKANE, Wash. — For the first time since October 1998, the Pacific men's soccer team went to Spokane and left with a victory over Whitworth, earning a 3-2 decision at the Whitworth Soccer Field on Saturday.

Whitworth (2-4-0, 0-1-0 NWC), the preseason favorite in the Northwest Conference, opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Kyle Cacoyannis scored his first goal of the season.

Pacific (4-1-0, 1-0-0 NWC) answered less than 10 minutes later when freshman James Curro (Anchorage, Alaska) opened his collegiate account, scoring in the 33rd minute to send the game to halftime tied 1-1.

The Boxers pushed forward to open the second half and sprung loose in the 57th minute when senior Diego Lopes (San Francisco, Calif.) picked up his third assist of the season on the first goal of the afternoon for senior Matt Kimball (Tigard, Ore.).

Kimball struck again three minutes later to complete his first brace of the season and net his fourth goal of the season in the 60th minute.

Whitworth scored in the 75th minute on a penalty, but the Boxers held off the Pirates late to pull out the road victory.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN... After pulling a goal back in the 75th minute, Whitworth fired off three late shots, but were unable to place the final three chances on frame.

STAT OF THE GAME... Pacific's victory over Whitworth was the first for Pacific in Spokane since October of 1998, when the Boxers toppled the Pirates 2-1 in overtime. The last time the Boxers topped the Pirates was a 2-1 decision in September of 2010 at Pacific.

NEXT UP... Pacific heads to Walla Walla, Wash. tomorrow to visit Whitman with a 2:30 p.m. scheduled kickoff.
