The Pacific volleyball team saw its 11-match winning streak come to an end with a 20-25, 25-19, 27-25, 25-22 loss to visiting Pacific Lutheran on Friday night in Forest Grove.
The Boxers (11-2, 5-1 NWC) won the opening set for the 13
th-straight match to begin the contest. Despite the loss, sophomore
Karlee Duncan (Bend, Ore.) had her fourth-straight double double and seventh of the season with 15 kills and 10 digs; plus, junior
Ellie Parker (Beaverton, Ore.) had her sixth double double of the season, recording 45 assists and 21 digs in the defeat.
The Lutes (10-3, 6-1 NWC) tandem of Mackenzie Harris and Chloe Epker had 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Epker finished the night with a double double, recording 12 kills and 18 digs, plus teammate Kiane Calles had 35 assists and 17 digs in the win. Pacific Lutheran had 10 blocks and five service aces compared to an ace and five blocks for the host Boxers.
A tightly contested first set featured 14 tie scores and five lead changes. With the set tied at 18, a 7-2 spurt by the Boxers that included an ace by senior
Karissa Komo and two kills by Duncan saw Pacific take the opening set by a 25-20 margin.
The second set was controlled by the visitors, who led nearly from start to finish. The Lutes out hit the Boxers, .217 to .120 as the two teams went into the10-minute intermission tied at a set apiece.
Pacific built an early 6-1 lead to start the third set that prompted a PLU timeout. After the timeout, the Lutes scored 13 of the next 19 points to tie the set at 12. The two teams traded leads until a three-point spurt by the visitors put them ahead for the remainder of the set. Harris had six of her team-high 14 kills to lead PLU.
Twice, the Boxers fought off set points before a kill by Angelica Hulett and a Boxer hitting error allowed the Lutes to win the set, 27-25.
The Boxers started the fourth set with a 6-2 lead and remained in front until a 10-4 run to end the set and the match propelled the Lutes to the win.
Next, Pacific will host New Hope on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Stoller Center in a non-conference match.
