Curro nets Boxers' winner over Loggers

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — The second goal of James Curro's collegiate career was the first game winner of his career in Pacific's 1-0 home win over Puget Sound on Saturday at Ledbetter Field at Hanson Stadium.

The Boxers (6-3-0, 3-2-0 NWC) and Loggers (5-3-0, 3-2-0 NWC) felt one another out for much of the first half, with two sides combining for six shots and one shot on frame during the opening period.

The 0-0 scoreline vanished in the 59th minute when senior Matt Kimball  (Tigard, Ore.) delivered an overhead flick into the Boxers' offensive half, which was run onto by Curro (Anchorage, Alaska). A couple of quick touches from Curro put the freshman in position to slot a low shot to the far post from 25 yards out.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN... Puget Sound pushed forward late in the match, and saw a Zac Lokay headed shot saved by Pacific's senior goalkeepr Leyton Thommasen (Des Moines, Wash.). Lokay's header was followed by a Dane Schatz strike that was blocked by a Boxers' defender, ending the Loggers final offensive attack.

STAT OF THE GAME... The Boxers' cleansheet was the 18th of Thommasen's collegiate career.

NEXT UP... Pacific plays host to Pacific Lutheran on Sunday with a scheduled kickoff of noon on the pitch of Ledbetter Field at Hanson Stadium.

HAT TRICK, QUICK FACTS...
1...
Curro's game winning goal was the first game winner of his career and the first goal scored by the freshman at home.

2... A Pacific freshman has scored two-or-more goals in a season in seven straight seasons, stretching back to 2010 when Nick Rudella netted a pair of goals as a freshman.

3... The Boxers have won four straight one-goal games at home against the Loggers, a streak that began with a 3-2 win in November of 2014.
