Kaela Collins (pictured) scored the first five points of the second quarter to spark a game-deciding 12-2 run by the Pacific University women's basketball team who defeated Puget Sound, 88-78 on Friday night in Forest Grove.
The Boxers (3-10, 2-3
NWC) landed five players in double figures including career-highs by Collins (21 points,),
Liana Tanaka (22 points) and
Charli Elliot (14 points). Also in double figures were
Jenee Brown (13 points) and
Courtney Carolan (12 points).
The Loggers (6-8, 1-4
NWC)
were led by Cassidy Daugherty, who had 26 points and Jamie Lange, who had a
double double with 16 points and a game-high 19 rebounds in the loss. Daugherty tied a Puget Sound single-game record with eight 3-pointers. Elizabeth
Prewitt also had a
double double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds for Puget Sound.
Puget Sound scored the first six points of the game before Pacific came back with 13 unanswered points for a 13-6 lead. In the opening quarter, the Boxers shot 57.1% and outscored Puget Sound by an 11-3 margin in points off turnovers.
In the second quarter, a three-point play by Collins put Pacific ahead 24-23 with 8:46 left. Collins and the Boxers stretched the lead to as much as 15 in the quarter.
The third quarter saw a resilient Puget Sound team cut the deficit to two on a pair of occasions. The Boxers held a 61-59 lead as the action went to the
final quarter. Pacific remained in front for the rest of the quarter, stretching the lead to as much as 11 in the last 10 minutes. To seal the win, Pacific shot 66.7% (10-for-15) from the field and held Puget Sound to 31.3% (5-for-16) shooting in the last quarter. The home win for Pacific is its first win over Puget Sound at the Stoller Center since January 19, 2013.
Next, Pacific will face Willamette on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Salem. The Boxers have won the last two meetings against the
Bearcats on their home court. The Boxers will look for its first three-game conference winning streak since 2015-16 when they were victorious over Puget Sound (1/15/16), Pacific Lutheran (1/16/16) and Lewis & Clark (1/22/16).
