Four Boxers scored in double figures to lead the Pacific University women's basketball team to an 80-72 win over host Whitworth on Saturday in Spokane.
The Boxers (2-10, 1-3 NWC) were led by a career-high 21 points from
Liana Tanaka (pictured) (Kahului, Hawaii), who hit a team-high three 3-pointers in the win. As a team, Pacific hit a season-high 8 three-pointers in the win. Joining Tanaka in double figures by
Courtney Carolan (Spokane Valley, Wash.) and Jeneé Brown (Kailua, Hawaii) each scored 13 and
Megan Wesel (Winchester, Calif.) added 10. Pacific controlled the boards, outrebounding the Pirates by three with a season-high 50 rebounds in the win. Carolan tied a season-high with nine rebounds to lead Pacific.
The Pirates (6-7, 1-3 NWC) picked up a game-high 22 from Camy Aguinaldo to lead Whitworth. Also in double figures was Alli Kieckbush and Madison Moffat, who scored 19 and 12 points.
After the fourth tie of the game, in the opening quarter, Wesel hit a 3-pointer that put the Boxers ahead for the remainder of the quarter. The Boxers stretched the lead to as much as 13 in the second quarter. Host Whitworth cut the deficit with eight unanswered, trimming the Pacific lead to 38-33 with 1:54 left. The Boxers remained in front and returned the lead to double digits to as much as 12 on a pair of occasions before a Pirates squad rallied to tie the game at 56 by the end of the third quarter.
The game went back and forth as the two teams remained tied four more times until four unanswered points by the Boxers'
Jenee Brown and
Liana Tanaka. Pacific scored 14 of the final 20 points and stretched the lead to as much as nine in the closing minutes. To seal the win, Pacific drained six of its final eight free throws who leave Spokane with its first road win since Jan. 3, 2009.
Next, Pacific will host Puget Sound on Friday, Jan. 12 at 6 p.m. at the Stoller Center.
