The Pacific women's soccer team used the momentum of a first half goal and a clean defensive effort to lead them to a 2-0 victory over Lewis and Clark.
Â
Lewis and Clark (3-9-2, 1-8-1 NWC) challenged the Boxer (2-11-1, 2-7-1 NWC) defense early, with two shots on goal in the 5
th and 9
th minute but Boxer keeper
Saya Brown would stop both of them.
Â
Those would be the last Pioneer attempts on target, as Pacific's defense would take over and control the tempo for the rest of the half.
Â
Pacific would get three chances to score in the first half as
Brooklynn Smith,
Devon Medina, and
Emily Thompson, would all have their attempts saved by the Pioneer keeper.
Â
The Boxers would break through in the 30
th minute when
Gabby Glaser was able to put one into the back of the net off of the assist from
Lydia King, giving the Boxers a 1-0 lead on her first goal of the season.
Â
"It was great, it got the team excited and helped us stay in it and finish the game," said Glaser about her goal.
Â
Using the momentum from the first half, the Boxers would narrowly miss an attempt to extend the lead, as
Kira Negrete would hit the post in the 47
th minute.
Â
Negrete would end up finding Thompson, who would double the lead on her fifth goal of the season in the 80
th minute, effectively putting the game away.
Â
"Our defense has been coming up huge these past two games with two shutouts," said Thompson about the game. "It feels good going into the second half of conference play with this momentum."
Â
Pacific's women are back Friday Oct 19 at 6 p.m. facing Whitman College, kicking off Pacific University's Homecoming weekend.
