Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Pacific Loses in Overtime to Whittier, 64-62

A 3-pointer with 1:55 left in overtime was just enough to lead Whittier past the Pacific University women's basketball team on Friday night as the Poets edged the Boxers, 64-62 in overtime.

The Boxers (1-1) forced overtime when junior Ashley Jones hit a 3-pointer with :07 left in regulation to force the sixth tie of the game. Jones finished the game with a season-high 20 points, who set a new career high for the second-consecutive night.

The Poets (2-0) were led by the tandem of Teani White and Cali Cubel, who had 21 and 17 points, respectively. It was Cubel, who hit her only 3-pointer of the game for what proved to be the decisive basket.

Despite the loss, Jones made six 3-pointers in the loss for Pacific as the Boxers landed three in double figures. The last Boxer to make six 3-pointers in a game was Karli McHone, who hit six against the Lutes of Pacific Lutheran on January 16, 2016. Liana Tanaka and Courtney Carolan added 16 and 14 points; plus Charli Elliott pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds in the loss.

Whittier overcame a six-point halftime deficit, 32-26, and regained the lead when Zaria Branch made a lay-up with 5:53 to go in regulation to put the Poets ahead 51-50. The home team remained in front for the remainder of regulation but it still was a one-possession game. Cubel made two free throws to put the Poets ahead three, 55-52 until a Boxers' timeout was called by first-year head coach Alecia Wilson, who drew up the play for Jones to send the game into overtime.

Pacific took its only lead in the overtime when Carolan hit a 3-pointer with 3:05 left to go. The game was tied for the seventh time when Megan Wesel made a layup with 2:21 to play before the decisive 3-pointer by Cubel.

The Boxers will play its third game in four days on Sunday when they host the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 3 p.m. at the Stoller Center.
