For the fourth-straight game, the Pacific men's basketball team eclipsed the 100-point mark and senior
Brevin Brown had his second 30-point game of the season to lead the Boxers to a 112-109 win over UC Santa Cruz on Sunday afternoon.
The Boxers (2-2) shot a season-best 50% (43-for-86) from the field and had 12 3-pointers – its third game on the season with double-digit 3-pointers – in the win. Joining Brown in double figures were
Marcus Wallace (18 pts.),
Chris Kobayashi (16 pts.),
Andy Isokpehi (11 pts.) and
Davis Holly (10 pts.).
The Banana Slugs (1-2) were led by the double double from Sam Gabbard, who had 34 points and 12 rebounds in the loss. He was joined in double figures by Will Crain (19 pts.), Rashard Thornhill (12 pts.) and Patrick Ramos (11 pts.). UC Santa Cruz shot 68.4% from the field.
The difference in the game came as the Pacific defense forced 24 UC Santa Cruz turnovers and outscored the Banana Slugs, 30-12, in points off turnovers.
The game went back and forth for first eight-plus minutes until Wallace hit his second 3-pointer to put the Boxers ahead 22-19 with 11:26 left to play in the opening half. The Boxers stretched the lead to as much as 19 on a pair of occasions, heading into halftime with a 71-53 lead. In the opening half, 52 of the 71 came from the Pacific bench and they outscored the Banana Slugs by a 23-3 margin in points off turnovers.
In the second half, UC Santa Cruz rallied to cut the deficit to three, 109-106 with 1:49 to play. The Boxers came back on its next possession with a layup by
Davis Holly to stretch the lead to five, 111-106 with 1:30 to go.
The Banana Slugs came back with a lay-up, lowering the Pacific lead to three for a second time with :58 to play. The two teams each made one of two free throws in the closing seconds. However, the game was not decided until the Banana Slugs' missed a last-second 3-pointer.
Next, Pacific will come home to host Cal Lutheran on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at the Stoller Center in a pre-Thanksgiving contest.
