The Pacific University women's basketball team outscored Redlands by an 11-3 margin in overtime en route to a 66-58 win as part of the Hyatt December Classic on Tuesday in Santa Cruz, Calif.
The Boxers (5-4) move over the .500 mark with its fourth-straight win and landed four players in double figures. It is the first four-game winning streak for Pacific since they opened the 2012-13 season with six-consecutive wins.
Leading the Pacific efforts was sophomore
Courtney Carolan, who had 16 points on 6-for-10 shooting from the field and 2-for-2 from beyond the arc. She was joined by senior
Charli Elliott, who had her second double double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds, plus junior
Ashley Jones and senior
Liana Tanaka added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Redlands (2-7) was led by a game-high 23-point effort from Cassandra Lacey, who was joined in double figures by Alyssa Downs, who added 14 in the loss.
The Boxers sent the game to overtime with clutch play across the team in the fourth quarter. Down three with less than 2 minutes to play in regulation, Carolan hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 53 and the eighth time of the afternoon. After the Bulldogs regained the lead on its next possession, the Spokane Valley, Washington native drove in for a lay-up to tie the game at 55. A last-second attempt by Carolan fell short on the final possession of regulation, sending the game into the extra session.
To start the overtime, Elliott made one of two free throws and a three-point play by Carolan put Pacific ahead by four, 59-55, with 2:45 left in the extra period. The four-point lead would be the largest for Pacific since they held a seven-point lead with 4:58 left in the second quarter. The Boxers managed to stretch the lead in the extra session behind the play of Tanaka, who scored five of the final seven points for Pacific in the win. Not to be lost in the offensive success for the Boxers was its defensive play in the overtime, holding Redlands to 1-for-8 shooting from the field and an 8-4 advantage on the boards.
Pacific will return home for its next game as they will host Eastern Oregon on Saturday, Dec. 29 at 5 p.m. at the Stoller Center. The Mountaineers are currently ranked No. 14 in the latest NAIA poll.
