Boxers Four-Game Winning Streak Ends in 61-45 Loss to Eastern Oregon

The Pacific University women's basketball team saw its four-game winning streak snapped in a 61-45 loss to Eastern Oregon University on Saturday night at the Stoller Center.

The Boxers (6-5) built a pair of 11-point leads in the opening quarter against the visitors from La Grande. Despite the loss, Pacific senior Megan Wesel came off the bench to score 10 points and three Boxers had nine points.

The Mountaineers (11-2) were led by a 19-point effort by reserve Maren Herrud. She was joined in double figures by Maya Ah You Dias, who had a double double (10 points, 12 rebounds) and Jane Nelson (14 points).

The two teams traded 3-pointers to begin the contest before 11 unanswered points by the Boxers put Pacific ahead 14-3 with 2:13 left to play in the opening quarter. Nine of the 11 points came from Liana Tanaka, who was held scoreless for the remainder of the contest. Pacific wrapped up the opening quarter with a 21-11 lead and remained in front despite a pesky effort by the visitors for the second quarter.

Eastern Oregon scored the first three points of the second half to take its first lead since the opening minutes of the contest. The lead went back and forth between two teams until seven unanswered points put the Mountaineers ahead 43-37 with 4:33 left to play in the third quarter and for the remainder of the contest.

The Boxers' Charli Elliott made a pair of free throws, cutting the deficit to 43-41 with 2:34 left in the third quarter. EOU answered with the final four points of the third quarter and the first four points to start the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers pushed the lead to double digits for nearly the remainder of the contest en route to the win.

Next, Pacific will return to Northwest Conference play as they will face Puget Sound on Friday, Jan. 4 at 6 p.m. at the Stoller Center. Last year, the Boxers swept both meetings against the Loggers.
