The Pacific University women's basketball team landed five players in double figures and shot at a 50.8% (33-for-65) clip en route to an 83-71 win over Northwest University on Friday night at the Stoller Center.
The Boxers (3-4) fed off the energy of the home crowd, shooting its highest percentage from the field since a January 12, 2018 win over Puget Sound, last season.
Among the five in double figures was senior
Liana Tanaka, who had a game-high 20 points to lead Pacific. She was joined in double digits by senior
Charli Elliott, who had her first double double of the season (15 points, 10 rebounds), sophomore
Courtney Carolan with 15 points, juniors
Alexa Hinkley and
Ashley Jones added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Eagles (3-8) were led by a 15-point effort from Miranda Lagenhorst, who also had a team-high nine rebounds. She was joined in double figures by Livi Lindsey, who came off the bench to score 10 points.
Pacific scored the first eight points of the game and led from start to finish in the win. Tanaka and Jones each hit a 3-pointer and a put-back attempt by Elliott sparked the Boxers. Â Pacific stretched the lead to as much as the 13 in the first 10 minutes, shooting 56.3% (9-for-16) from the field for a 22-13 after the opening quarter.
The Eagles came back in the second quarter and shot 58.3% from the field but the Boxers remained hot with a 50% effort themselves. Pacific went into the halftime break with a 45-28 lead. The 17-point halftime lead was the largest by a Boxer team since a 29-point (46-17) advantage against Walla Walla on January 3, 2016.
The Northwest bench outscored the Boxers by an 11-0 margin in the third quarter, cutting the Pacific lead to nine, 60-51. In the quarter, the Eagles held the Boxers to a 46.2% (6-for-13) effort from the field. Northwest continued its comeback efforts in the fourth quarter and managed to cut the Boxer lead to two, 68-66 with 5:05 left to play.
Hinkley led the Boxers back from the threat, making her second 3-pointer of the game as the Boxers scored seven-straight points to push the lead to nine, 75-66. To seal the win, Hinkley came back with her third 3-pointer of the game that put the advantage at double digits for the remainder of the contest.
Next, the Boxers will face Corban University on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Stoller Center. Â
