FOREST GROVE — Senior
Haley Kodama ripped a two-run home run, while freshman
Nicole Martinez made an collegiate debut as the Pacific softball team swept Northwest at Sherman/Larkins Stadium on a snow Sunday.
The Boxers (2-0) begin a long 16-game stint on the road with a Tuesday night doubleheader at Concordia set to begin at 5 p.m.
GAME 1: Pacific 4, Northwest 3
Martinez (Yorba Linda, Calif.) made her collegiate debut with a 2-3 showing in the Boxers' 4-3 opening win over Northwest, while sophomore
Ashley Martin (Sutherlin, Ore.) struck out six Eagles in a complete game victory.
The Boxers struck for three runs in the bottom of the first after Martinez singled on the second pitch she was, before stealing second and heading to third on a ground out. After sophomore
Katelyn Macaitis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) reached on an error and Martinez scampered to third, freshman
Hailey Miller (Elk Grove, Calif.) plated Martinez with a squeeze bunt. A second Northwest error allowed Macaitis-Smith to score, while Miller wrapped up the scoring in the first when she scored during a rundown elsewhere on the base paths.
Northwest struck for two runs in the top of the fourth, but Pacific tallied a final insurance run in the bottom of the fifth. Freshman
Jill Uyeda (Gresham, Ore.) reached on a fielders choice before stealing second and advancing to third when Macaitis-Smith reached on an error. Uyeda would score on a ground out by Miller.
Uyeda's run proved to be the game winner when Northwest scratched a third run onto the scoreboard in the top of the sixth.
Martin finished the opener with six strikeouts in seven innings of work.
GAME 2: Pacific 10, Northwest 2 (5 inn.)
Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) launched a two-run homer in game two, while sophomore
Morgan Masters (Tenino, Wash.) tossed five innings with four strikeouts to pick up her first win of the season as Pacific topped Northwest 10-2.
Northwest scored in the opening frame, but Pacific answered with two outs in the bottom of the inning after Uyeda doubled and advanced to third on the play. After the second out of the inning was recorded, Uyeda would cross the plate on a double to right center from Miller.
The Boxers added three runs in the bottom of the third, when Macaitis-Smith scored on a single to left from senior
Trisha Snydar (Lynden, Wash.). Kodama followed Snydar's single with a two-run home run to left field, giving Pacific a 4-1 advantage.
The Eagles pushed a second run across in the fourth, but a huge bottom half of the frame secured a shortened victory for Pacific.
Pacific hung six runs on Northwest in the bottom of the fourth with freshman
Kiana Kushiyama (Beaverton, Ore.) scoring on a throwing error, while sophomore
Becca Bernard (Roseville, Calif.) and Martinez scored on a Uyeda double. Miller scored via an obstruction call, before Kodama and freshman
Marcee Nakamura (Aiea, Hawaii) were plated on a triple by freshman
Montana Vaught (Wailuku, Hawaii).
