Boxers open conference play with pair of wins over Bearcats

SALEM, Ore. — Trisha Snydar hit a two-run home run to win game one, while Jill Uyeda took advantage of a throwing error to score the winner in game two of Pacific's Saturday sweep of Willamette.

The Boxers improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in NWC play with a 10-9 win in game one and a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

Pacific returns to Willamette on Sunday for a NWC doubleheader against the Bearcats, with first pitch scheduled for noon.

GAME ONE: Pacific 10, Willamette 9
Snydar (Lynden, Wash.), Hailey Miller (Elk Grove, Calif.) and Haley Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) all drove in two runs, while Erin Shick (San Diego, Calif.) picked up a victory in relief as the Boxers topped Willamette 10-9 in the NWC opener.

The Bearcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, before Becca Bernard (Roseville, Calif.) tied things up in the top of the second with an infield single that allowed Lilly Meek (Buena Park, Calif.) to cross the plate.

Willamette answered with five runs in the bottom of the second, but again Pacific responded by bringing the score 6-5 in Willamette's favor at the end of the Boxers' half of the third.

The Boxers opened the scoring in the top of the frame when Jill Uyeda (Gresham, Ore.) and Katelyn Macaitis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) were plated on a base hit by Kodama. A wild pitch scored Snydar, before a second wild pitch in the frame allowed Kodama to scamper home.

Pacific took a 7-6 lead in the fourth when Miller singled to left and plated Nicole Martinez and Macaits-Smith.

Macaitis-Smith drove in the eight run of the game for Pacific in the top of the sixth on a single to left, that scored Martinez. With two outs in the frame, Snydar drove a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for her first home run of the season. Snydar's drive gave Pacific a 10-6 lead after 5.5 innings of play, and proved to be the game winner when the Bearcats scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh.

Shick struck out seven hitters in 4.1 innings of work for the Boxers in the pitching circle.

GAME TWO: Pacific 5, Willamette 4
Miller again drove in a pair of runs, and another reliever picked up a win, as Alyssa Burns (El Dorado Hills, Calif.) earned a game two victory over Willamette.

Miller opened the scoring in the top of the first when she tripled down the right field line to score Macaitis-Smith.

The Bearcats responded in the bottom of the third with four runs, but again the Boxers were prepared to battle back.

Martinez would score on a wild pitch in the top of the fifth, before Uyeda scored on a Macaitis-Smith sacrifice fly to center.

Miller, who opened the scoring with a RBI triple in the first, pushed across the tying run in the bottom of the seventh when she singled to short and scored Martinez. The Bearcats looked to stop the bleeding on the play with Miler joining Uyeda on the bases, but a throwing error allowed Uyeda to cross the plate with the game winning run.

Miller, Uyeda and Martinez all finished with two hits each in game two.

Burns struck out eight in the Boxers' game two victory over Willamette.
