The Pacific women's tennis outlasted Pacific Lutheran for a 5-4 win in a non-conference match at the Holce Tennis Courts on Sunday.
The Boxers (2-0) won at No. 1 and 2 doubles both by an 8-2 margin to begin the day. The team of
Marissa Hayashi (Hilo, Hawaii) and
Chantelle Baclay (Lahaina, Hawaii) were victorious at No. 1 and
Sophia Nishimura (Honolulu, Hawaii) and
Johanna Wilson (The Dalles, Ore.) were the winning tandem at No. 2.
A 6-4, 6-4 win by Wilson at No. 4 singles put the Boxers ahead 3-1 in the match. The Lutes managed to win at No. 3 and 5 singles to tie the match at 3. The Boxers regained the lead in the match with a 7-5, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles by
Callie Oyama (Hilo, Hawaii). Then, PLU tied the match with a win at No. 1 singles and forced the match to be decided at No. 2 singles between the Boxers'
Sophia Nishimura and the Lutes' Hannah Jeffries.
Nishimura took the opening set by a slim 7-6 margin and won the second set by a 6-4 margin to clinch the victory for the host Boxers.
Next, Pacific will travel to Lewis & Clark on Saturday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. in a non-conference matchup between the two local rivals.
