Despite the second double double of the season by junior
Charli Elliott, the Pacific University women's basketball team dropped an 80-65 decision to Willamette on Friday in Forest Grove.
The Boxers (3-18, 2-10 NWC) had four players in double figures, including Elliott who scored 14 points to go along with 12 rebounds and three steals. Also in double figures was junior
Jenee Brown (Kailua, Hawaii) with 14 points of her own, senior
Kaela Collins (Snohomish, Wash.) added 11 points and junior
Megan Wesel (Winchester, Calif.) chipped in 10 points in the contest
The Bearcats (13-9, 9-4 NWC) were led by Kylie Towry who poured in a game-high 33 points while grabbing six rebounds and dishing out six assists. Joining Towry in double figures was Ashley Evans, who scored 19 points and Britanny Kochenderfer added 13 points and 11 rebounds. Willamette shot 46.4% from the field in the win, compared to 38.1% for Pacific.
Willamette used a 10-0 first quarter run to grab an 11-point lead early in the game, but a 9-3 run by the Boxers in the second quarter cut the Bearcat lead down to four. The Boxers cut an eight-point halftime deficit to three when Brown and Elliot scored the first five points of the final 20 minutes. Willamette rallied to push the lead to double digits later in the quarter but there still was a lot of fight left in the Boxers.
The Boxers managed to cut the deficit to one, 57-56, when Brown drove in for a layup with 7:32 left to play. Then, Towry singlehandedly had an answer for the Bearcats had an answer with a personal 7-1 run to end the comeback hopes for Pacific.
Pacific is on the road tomorrow Feb. 9, as they travel to Tacoma, Wash, to take on the Puget Sound Loggers at 4 p.m.
