The Pacific University baseball team dropped a double header to Pacific Lutheran University Saturday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium, 4-3 in the opening game and 3-2 in the second.
The Boxers (8-11, 4-7 NWC) dropped their sixth straight game against the Lutes, but battled a tough Pacific Lutheran (8-8, 6-2 NWC) team during Saturday's games.
In game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the Boxers found themselves trailing early after a bases clearing hit by the Lutes gave them a 4-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning. However, Pacific would chip away at the lead starting the bottom of the fourth, as senior
Joey Galeno (Auburn, Wash.) scored on a single from freshmen
Chase Anderson (Federal Way, Wash.). The Boxers did more damage in the sixth as senior
Dylan Wright (Gilbert, Ariz.) scored on a double from Galeno cutting the Lutes lead in half. Pacific was not finished in the 6th inning, as Galeno eventually scored when Anderson recorded his second RBI of the game, making the score 4-3 in favor of the Lutes.
The Boxer's offensive momentum carried over to the defense in the eighth, as
Dylan Wright and freshmen
Derek Legeza (Peoria, Ariz.) hauled in a pair of diving catches in the outfield. In the bottom of the inning, Pacific made a last-ditch effort to cut down the Lutes lead when the Boxers put two players in scoring position with two outs. However, a groundout ended the Boxers chances. Despite a two out single by senior
Von Ferguson (Everett, Wash.) in the bottom of the 9th inning, the Lutes were able to close out the game with a strikeout, giving them the one run victory.
Galeno led the way at the plate for the Boxers with two hits, two runs scored and one RBI in the first game of the day.
Starting on the mound for Pacific was junior
Casey Brown (Peoria, Ariz.) who went seven innings, giving up eight hits, striking out three and not allowing an earned run. Brown was relieved by senior
Cole Kanazawa (Honolulu, Hawaii) who allowed two hits and no runs in his two innings pitched.
For Pacific Lutheran, Chad Gideon pitched 7.1 innings, allowing eight hits, three runs and recoding three strikeouts. Three Lutes recorded two hits in the first game including Jacob Bockelie, Austin Gormley and Matt Vick. Offensively for the Lutes, Connor Canto had a team-high three RBI.
Game two was a battle between the starting pitchers of both Pacific and Pacific Lutheran early in the game. For Pacific, junior
Sam Lawrence (Sammamish, Wash.) started on the mound and went 6.2 innings, allowing five hits, zero runs and walks in a no decision.
Pacific broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the sixth on a RBI single from junior
Dustin Meyer (Silverton, Ore.), scoring Galeno. The Boxers again got on the board the following inning after Anderson scored on single by junior
Derek Ridgway (Elko, Nev.), giving Pacific a 2-0 advantage.
The 8th proved to be the deciding inning for the game as the Lutes rallied to score three runs behind a two RBI triple from Jacob Bockelie, followed by an RBI single from Pacific Lutheran's Anthony Gosline, giving the Lutes the 3-2 lead.
Galeno continued his strong day in game two at the plate, where he recorded two more hits and an RBI. Meyer also tallied a pair of hits and scored a run in the second game. Kanazawa closed out the second straight game for the Boxers, pitching 2.1 innings and recording five strikeouts.
The Lutes were led by the pitching of Cole Johnson who threw 6.2 innings and allowed six hits, two earned runs and had three strikeouts. Bockelie led at the plate for Pacific Lutheran, recording two hits, two RBI's and scoring one run.
