Boxers Drop Pair to Nationally-Ranked George Fox

No. 20 George Fox swept a doubleheader from the Pacific University softball team, 10-1 (6 innings) and 7-2 on Saturday in Forest Grove.

The Boxers (11-5, 5-3) were returning home after a 12-game road trip. Pacific had six hits in the first game with six-different players recording a hit in the loss.

The Bruins (14-5, 5-2) overcame a 1-0 deficit to score 10 unanswered runs in the win. Eight of the 10 runs came via home runs for George Fox, who had 11 hits. Starting pitcher Madison Sorensen raised her record to 10-0, allowing six Pacific hits and striking out four in the complete game.

Pacific got on the board first, scoring its only run in the second inning. Hailey Miller (Elk Grove, Calif.) singled to left-center field to lead off the inning. She moved to second on a Trisha Snydar (Lynden, Wash.) sacrifice bunt; then she came around to score on a RBI single up the middle by Haley Kodama (Pearl City, Hawaii) to put the host Boxers ahead early.

A three-run home run by the Bruins in the top of the 3rd put George Fox ahead for the rest of the contest. They added to their lead with two more in the fourth and five in the fifth. The Boxers nearly got back on the scoreboard in the fourth inning when with two out Snydar doubled down the right-field line. Next, Kodama hit the ball deep into the gap in right-center field before the Bruins' right fielder Roni Braun took a hit away from the senior third baseman.

In the nightcap, the two teams combined for 22 hits and nine runs but it was the Bruins, who were the victors by a 7-2 margin. Three Boxers had multiple hits including Nicole Martinez (Yorba Linda, Calif.), who had three and Trisha Snydar and Kaitlynn Donaca (Oregon City, Ore.) each had two in the loss. For George Fox, they had four home runs including a pair by Roni Braun in the win and four players with multiple hits.

After a scoreless first two innings, Pacific was kept off the scoreboard despite loading the bases in the third. The Bruins came back with a three-run fourth inning for an early lead – two of which came in on the first of two home runs by Braun.

In the fifth, a RBI single by Katelynn Macatis-Smith (Salem, Ore.) and a RBI double by Hailey Miller cut the deficit to one, 3-2 which prompted a Bruins' pitching change. After a single by Snydar put runners on the corners, the Bruins kept the Boxers from tying the game with back-to-back strikeouts.

Braun hit a solo home run in the sixth to stretch the lead to 4-2; then Pacific in its half of the inning loaded the bases for the second time in the game. Again, George Fox got a strikeout to end a Pacific threat. The Bruins added three more in the seventh for the final margin.

Next, the two teams will wrap up the weekend series with another doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 12 noon at Sherman-Larkins Stadium.
