Late Rallies by Nationally-Ranked George Fox Spoil Upset Minded Boxers

A pair of late rallies led No. 20 George Fox to a pair of wins over the Pacific University softball team on Sunday.

The Bruins (16-5, 7-2 NWC) edged Pacific (11-7, 5-5 NWC), 7-4 in eight innings in game one and broke a 4-4 tie with eight runs in the top of the seventh for a 13-5 win in game two.

Game 1
Six-different Boxers had a hit and Morgan Masters came off the bench to pick up two RBI to lead Pacific in the loss. Starting pitcher Tiare Guerrero went seven innings, scattering six hits and striking out one in a no decision.

The Bruins had seven hits including three by Aaliyah Kautz and Allison Meyer delivered a three-run home run for what proved to be the difference in the eighth. Starting pitcher Madison Sorensen went the distance, allowing six hits and striking out three to remain undefeated at 11-0.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the first, a RBI double by Hailey Miller and a RBI ground out by Trisha Snydar put Pacific ahead 2-1. The Bruins regained the lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly and a bases loaded walk to take a 3-2 advantage.

Pacific regained the lead in the sixth inning on a two-RBI pinch-hit single by Masters. The Boxers had runners on second and third after a Snydar single to lead off the inning and the Bruins misplayed a bunt by Haley Kodama.

Again, George Fox had an answer to the Boxer lead as Kautz hit a solo home run to tie the game at 4 to start the seventh inning. After Pacific was kept off the scoreboard in its half of the seventh, the game went into extra innings. It was the first extra-inning game of the season for the Boxers.

With one out and runners on first and third, Meyer hit a three-run home run for what proved to be the difference in the game.

Game 2
A 44-minute rain delay in the second inning did not dampen the spirits or silent the bats of the two teams. The two teams combined for 27 hits and 18 runs as the nationally-ranked Bruins rallied to score eight times in the top of the seventh for a 13-5 win over the host Boxers.

The Boxers had 15 hits including four from Kaitlynn Donaca and three more from Katelyn Macatis-Smith and Nicole Martinez in the loss. Trisha Snydar had two more RBI for Pacific.

The Bruins had 12 hits with Aaliyah Kautz leading the efforts with three and Allison Meyer had four RBI to lead George Fox.

Pacific scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first, plating a run when Hailey Miller hit a sacrifice fly to score Nicole Martinez, who singled to lead off the inning. Then, the Boxers added to its third when Snydar had a RBI single, scoring Martinez for a 2-0 lead in favor of Pacific.

A four-run fourth inning by the Bruins put George Fox ahead 4-2. The Boxers overcame leaving the bases loaded in the fifth to tie the game on a two-run home run by Snydar in the sixth inning.

The Bruins came back in the seventh, sending 13 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs for the final margin.

Next, Pacific will face Willamette on Monday at 2 p.m. in a rescheduled doubleheader from earlier this season. The two teams were rained out on Sunday, Feb. 25.
