Boxers Split Twinbill with Willamette

The Pacific University softball team split a doubleheader with Willamette on Monday, dropping game one by an 8-6 margin and winning the nightcap by a 4-3 margin.

The Boxers' (12-8, 6-6 NWC) Katelynn Macatis-Smith had two hits in each game to lead the Pacific offense.

Game 1
Willamette (3-12, 3-9 NWC) rallied from a 6-2 deficit to come back for an 8-6 win in the first game of the doubleheader. With the game tied at 6, the Bearcats plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to complete the comeback.

With the game tied at 2, Pacific took its first lead of the afternoon when they scored three runs on just one hit as they capitalized on three Bearcats' errors in the fourth inning. The Boxers' stretched the lead to 6-2 on a RBI single by Haley Kodama in the fifth. In its half of the fifth, back-to-back two-RBI singles by Breianna Mcleod and Emily Bishop tied the game at 6.

The Bearcats tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-6 lead.

Game 2
Trailing 3-0 and to begin the comeback for Pacific, Haley Kodama was hit by a pitch to start the seventh inning. Then, Montana Vaught singled to left field and Kaitlynn Donaca laid down a bunt single to load the bases.

Next, Boxers' head coach Liz Yandall called on Morgan Masters to pinch-hit, who delivered a bases-clearing double to tie the game at 3. Then, Yandall called on Kiana Kushiyama to re-enter the game for Masters, who went to third on a ground out by Nicole Martinez. Then, with one out, another coaching move by Yandall brought in pinch-hitter Taylor Nishimura, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Kushiyama to give Pacific a 4-3 lead.

Masters had three RBIs, plus Donaca was 2 for 3 with a run scored and Macaitis-Smith went 2 for 4 with a double to lead Pacific in the win. Pacific reliever Emily Gaines allowed one hit and registered one strikeout in three innings pitched to improve to 1-2 with the win.

Pacific will next host Puget Sound for a four-game series at Sherman-Larkins Stadium. Action gets underway on Saturday, March 24 with a doubleheader.
