Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Pacific Wins 6-3 Over Southwestern to Begin Spring Break Trip in Texas

The weather conditions in Texas did not deter the Pacific University men's tennis team from winning its fifth-straight in a 6-3 win over Southwestern University on Tuesday in Georgetown, Texas.

Weather conditions and other elements made for a long day for the Boxers, who traveled out of Portland on Monday. The win for Pacific improves the Boxers to 7-2 on the season and the Pirates of Southwestern fall to 6-6.

"I am super proud of the guys and how they battled," said head coach Pete Yellico. "Given the circumstances of rain, wind, etc., we embraced the elements well and that was the key for our victory."

Pacific started the day with doubles wins at No. 1 by Oscar Wight and Rayden Murata, who were victorious by an 8-3 margin and at No. 2 by Sage Katayama and Jonathan Chung, who won in a tiebreaker, 9-8 (10-4). It is the fifth-straight win in doubles by Katayama and Chung. "Going up 2-1 in doubles was very handy and put us in a great position," said Yellico.

Sean Murphy picked up the first singles win on the day for Pacific with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5. For Murphy, it is his fourth-straight win in singles. Then, Katayama, at No. 2 singles, was a 7-6, 6-2 winner. Wins at No. 1 and No. 6 singles by the host Pirates drew the contest closer. "There were battles in singles up and down the lineup," noted Yellico.

The Boxers secured the match with a win by sophomore Rayden Murata, who was victorious, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5. "Shout out to Rayden for clinching the match in a long third set," said Yellico. The Boxers also got a win from Jonathan Chung at No. 3 singles, who came from a set down to win, 2-6, 6-4 , 6-4 for his seventh-straight victory.

On Wednesday, Pacific will travel to Kerrville, Texas to face Schreiner University. Earlier this season, the Mountaineers defeated Hardin-Simmons, 5-4, who the Boxers defeated by a 7-2 margin on Feb. 24 in Forest Grove.
