Alyssa Burns pitched 1.2 innings of scoreless relief and four unanswered runs led the Pacific University softball team to a 4-2 win over Puget Sound on Thursday afternoon in Portland.
The game wraps up the series between the Boxers and Loggers, who only played one game of its doubleheader on Saturday, Mar. 24. The win secures a series win for Pacific, who improves to 15-9 overall and 9-7 in the Northwest Conference.
Pacific found itself behind 2-0 after a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. However, the Boxers came back with a home run of its own in the bottom of the inning when sophomore Katelyn Macatis-Smith hit the second home run of her career to cut the deficit to 2-1.
The Boxers took the lead in the fourth inning on the strength of some clutch hitting. With two out, back-to-back hits by Haley Miller and
Trisha Snydar put runners on second and third for
Haley Kodama [pictured]. The senior third baseman ripped the first pitch she saw from Loggers' starting pitcher Erica Gott to the fence, scoring Miller and Snydar to put Pacific ahead 3-2.
Pacific capitalized on a pair of errors for another run in the fifth to make it a two-run game, 4-2.
Puget Sound mounted a threat in the sixth after a Pacific error put runners on second and third with one out. The Boxers called on Burns to enter the game in relief of starter
Ashley Martin. Burns got Pacific out of the inning with a strike out looking and a fly out. Then, she retired the Loggers in order in the seventh for her first save of the season.
Next, Pacific will host Lewis & Clark for a four-game series that gets underway on Friday at noon at Sherman-Larkins Stadium.
