The Pacific University softball team swept a doubleheader from Whitworth University, winning game one by a 9-7 margin and taking the nightcap in an 8-1 win.
The Boxers (20-14, 14-12) pulled off its first doubleheader sweep of the Pirates since the 2014 campaign. To get the sweep took a pair of comebacks for Pacific.
Facing a 6-2 deficit, the Boxers started the comeback in game one, scoring a run on a bases loaded walk in the fourth to make it a three-run game. Then, Pacific scored three times in the fifth on just two hits – a RBI single by
Haley Kodama and a RBI double by
Jill Uyeda – to tie the game at 6.
The Pirates (21-15, 14-10) regained the lead when Sara Geyer hit a solo home run in the sixth.
However, there still remained a lot of momentum and fight in the Boxers dugout despite the 7-6 deficit. The Boxers came back with three runs on just one hit. To start the inning,
Hailey Miller doubled to left center and advanced to third on a Pirates error. The error came when Whitworth tried to throw out Katelyn Macatis-Smith, who was hustling from first to score the tying run at the plate. Later in the inning, the Boxers capitalized on a pair of wild pitches for what proved to be the difference.
Erin Shick came out of the bullpen for the Boxers in relief of
Morgan Masters to close out the game. She picked up three-straight groundouts for her first save of the season. Masters pitched two innings of two hit relief for the win to improve to 2-0. Offensively for Pacific, five-different Boxers had a hit; plus
Haley Kodama and
Kaitlynn Donaca each had two RBI in the win.
The nightcap saw the Boxers rally from an early 1-0 deficit to score the next eight runs. To complement the offensive explosion, Shick pitched a complete game, allowing just four hits and striking out four to raise her record to 4-0. Offensively, four Boxers had two hits - Katelyn Macatis-Smith,
Hailey Miller,
Montana Vaught and
Kaitlynn Donaca – plus seniors
Trisha Snydar and
Haley Kodama each had two RBI.
Pacific got on the board in the nightcap on a two out, two RBI single up the middle by Kodama to put the host Boxers ahead 2-1. A RBI sacrifice fly by Snydar in the third put Pacific ahead 3-1. An error by the Pirates in the fourth inning with the bases loaded, allowed three runs to score to extend the Pacific lead to 6-1. The Boxers added two more runs on RBI singles by
Hailey Miller and Snydar for an 8-1.
