Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Pacific Loses to Western Oregon, 2-1 in Overtime

Western Oregon University spoiled the upset bid of the Pacific University women's soccer team on Monday evening in the Boxers' home opener.

Western Oregon (2-1-1) controlled possession for most of the match, including the overtime stanza. Kennedy Clay took a crossing pass from Melinda Ortega in the 92nd minute for the game-winning goal.

Pacific (0-4) got on the board when senior Kira Negrete (pictured) fired a shot from just outside the box in the 8th minute for the early goal. It was the second goal of the senior from Lakewood, California. The Boxers held the lead until the 72nd minute on the strength of play of goalkeeper Kali Barber (Centennial, Colo.), who had a career-high nine saves in the contest and a tight collapsing defense.

The Wolves' Sydney Thomas snagged the equalizer when she scored after a pass from Amber Whitmore got ahead of the Pacific defense, tying the game at 1. An aggressive on the ball defense by the Boxers throughout the match, sent the contest to overtime.

In the extra period, the Wolves quickly mounted a threat and capitalized when Clay made the game-winning goal. WOU outshot the Boxers by a 11-1 margin on shots on goal in the win.

The scoreboard reflects a loss for the Boxers but there is a sense of confidence and positive outcomes for a Boxer women's soccer team, who will begin Northwest Conference with a matchup at George Fox on Saturday, Sept. 15 at noon and at Lewis & Clark on Sunday, Sept. 16 at noon.
