Three second half goals proved to be the difference as the Pacific men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision to Whitman on Friday night.
The Boxers (1-3-1, 0-1 NWC) surrendered back-to-back goals within a five-minute span of the second 45 minutes, ending a scoreless tie. Pacific regrouped and nearly got on the scoreboard in the 57
th minute when a
Braden Kojima shot sailed high and a shot by
Grant Rutledge in the 67
th minute was saved by the Blues' goalkeeper Matt Reich.
Whitman (2-3, 1-0 NWC) had an 11-5 advantage in shots with three-different goal scorers and Reich along with teammate Jack Fillipponi each had a save in the shutout. Reese Owens came off the bench to lead the offensive attack with a goal and an assist to go along with a team-high three shots in the win.
The Blues' Jacob Barsher ended the 0-0 contest in the 51
st minute, picking up the rebound shot attempt by Owens for the 1-0 lead. Minutes later, Blues' reserve David Chavarin stole the ball away from the Boxers midfield to set up Owens for a 2-0 lead in favor of the visitors. Later in the half, the Blues' Peter Stephens took the ball from Oscar Harding, where he performed a bicycle kick attempt to the near post for an impressive goal.
The only other shot on goal attempt for Pacific came from
Connor Evans and goalkeeper
Brock Jones had three saves in the loss for the Boxers.
Next, Pacific will look to end a two-game losing streak when they host Whitworth on Sunday at 2:30 p.m. on Ledbetter Field at Hanson Stadium.
