Two first half goals were just enough to lead visiting Whitworth to a 2-1 win over the Pacific University men's soccer team on Sunday afternoon.
The Boxers (1-3-1, 0-2 NWC) surrendered a pair of goals with a three-minute span, late in the first half in the loss.
The Pirates (3-4-1, 2-0 NWC) got on the board in the 36
th minute when Drew Wilson dribbled past the Boxers' defense from 20 yards out and fired a shot to the near post past the Boxers' goalkeeper for the early 1-0 lead. Just under three minutes later, Tyler Pangia chipped in a shot to extend the lead to 2-0.
Pacific got on the scoreboard when
Robert Nurmi scored his second goal of the season in the 55
th minute. Nurmi took a pass from
Cade Taniguchi on the ground and fired a shot from nine yards out just past the Pirates' goalkeeper.
The Boxers fought for the remainder of the contest, seeking the equalizer. Among the opportunities that came in favor of Pacific was a shot by
Grant Garcia that was saved and another opportunity was thwarted by the visitors' defense.
Pacific head coach
Eric Mild was up beat about what he saw in his team. "We should be encouraged by our performance today against a quality opponent. We had our chance and just need to convert them in the future to get results."
Next, Pacific will travel to local rival Linfield on Saturday, Sept. 22 at noon in McMinnville.
