Pacific Volleyball Loses in Three to Whitworth

The Pacific University volleyball team dropped a 25-19, 25-14, 25-18 decision to Whitman on Saturday evening in Forest Grove.

The Boxers (8-5, 2-2 NWC) lost in straight sets for the first time on the season and for the second time in 38 matches. Pacific sophomore Jordan Zweifel and junior Karlee Duncan each had seven kills in the loss for the Boxers.

The Pirates (10-4, 4-0) hit at a blistering .261 clip with a 16-kill effort from Jessica Schmautz in the win.

Pacific found itself behind 7-3 in the opening set before they rallied to cut the deficit to two, 17-15 until three-straight points ended comeback hopes for the host Boxers. Schmautz had six of her 16 kills to lead a Whitworth squad, who hit .282 in the opening set.

Another fast start by the visitors put the Boxers behind 7-2 early in the second set. The Pirates managed to hit .241 with a four-kill effort by Emiko Kahler and Schmautz sparked the visitors. Also, in the set, Whitworth kept the Boxer attack off balance with six blocks.

The Boxers jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third set for their first lead of the match. Whitworth answered the early spurt, regaining the lead on a 10-4 run to take an 11-10 lead. After the two teams exchanged a pair of sideouts, it was another three-point stretch by the visitors that put the Pirates ahead for the rest of the set to secure the win.

Next, Pacific will face Willamette on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in Salem.
