Coming off a strong showing at last weekend's ITA Regional Tournament, the Pacific University men's tennis team posted an 8-1 win over Willamette in a non-conference matchup on Saturday in Forest Grove.
The Boxers (1-0), who will be seeking a spot in the Northwest Conference Tournament for a fifth-straight year, have yet to solidify its lineup as they wrap up the first month of practice. The win gave second-year head coach
Pete Yellico a chance to see how his team looks with seven freshmen and just one senior.
Pacific started the match with three-straight 8-1 victories in doubles. The Boxers continued to dominate the match as it shifted to singles. Among the impressive wins was a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles by
Joey Balleweg, who played in just four singles matches as a freshman in 2017-18.
"This was a great chance to showcase our whole team's depth," said Yellico. "We were able to get a lot of our younger guys in to get some match experience. I still think we are yet to be firing on all cylinders."
Also among the winners were freshman
Quentin Gonzalez, who won his singles match by a 6-1, 6-0 margin at No. 3 singles, freshman
Reece Parr at No. 6 singles and sophomore
Garret Katayama, who were also victorious by 6-1, 6-0 margins.
The Boxers lone loss was a tightly contest matchup at No. 1 singles where
Jonathan Chung dropped a 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (14-12). loss.
Next, Pacific will wrap up the fall with a matchup against UC Santa Cruz on Sunday, October 14.
