Boxers Split Opening Day of 2018 Spike It Up Classic

The Pacific University volleyball split its two matches at the 2018 Spike It Up Classic, defeating Minnesota-Morris (25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-13) and dropping a tough four-set decision to host No. 2 Colorado College.

Three Boxers recorded double-digit kills including Jordan Zweifel (16 kills), Karlee Duncan (15 kills) and Milana Ivkovic (15 kills) to lead Pacific to a 25-15, 25-19, 22-25, 25-13 win over Minnesota-Morris to begin the day.

Setter Ellie Parker had 54 assists – just three assists shy of the Pacific four-set, single-match record. Her efforts led Pacific to a .299 hitting percentage in the win. Plus, Ivkovic had four service aces in the win to lead a service game for the Boxers, who had eight aces in the win.

After the two teams traded the first two points, the Boxers scored nine of the next 12 points to build a lead for the remainder of the set. Duncan had six of her 15 kills to lead Pacific, who hit .242 in the opening set. The Boxers came out in the second set to hit .345 with five kills by Zweifel to pace the Boxers.

The Cougars won the third set by a 25-22 margin to force a fourth set.  With five kills by Ivkovic and Pacific hit at a blistering .406 percentage in the set, the Boxers extended its winning streak to four.

On the second match of the day, the Boxers took the first set from No. 2 ranked Colorado College, the Boxers dropped the next three hard fought sets in Colorado Springs. 

Behind a .394 hitting percentage and 15 kills as a team the Boxers (5-2) would take set 1 25-17. Morgan Mendicino led the way with seven kills and Parker set the pace of the Boxer attack with 11 assists.

The Boxers used a 10-3 run midway through the set to cut their deficit down to 4 trailing only 20-16. Using a pair of Alex Morones aces in the middle of the run and four Ivkovic kills in the set. The Boxers would ultimately drop the set by a 25-18 margin.

The third set once again saw the Boxers use a late run charged by sub Elika Unti, who added back-to-back kills in a 9-5 run the Boxers used to make the score 21-19. Two Boxer errors and a pair of kills would propel Colorado College (7-0) to a set three win.

In the final set the Boxers found themselves in an early hole and could not close the gap as Colorado rode 16 team kills and three service aces to a 25-19 set 4 and ultimately 3-1 match victory.
