Pacific Drops 66-59 Decision to Pacific Lutheran

Three members of the Pacific University women's basketball team scored in double figures and outscored host Pacific Lutheran by 12 in the fourth quarter in a 66-59 loss on Saturday.

The Boxers (6-9, 0-6 NWC) were led by a 16-point effort from sophomore Courtney Carolan, who also had six rebounds and three assists in the loss. She was joined in double figures by Charli Elliott and Liana Tanaka, who added 15 and 12 points, respectively.

The Lutes (11-3, 4-2 NWC) held the Boxers to six points in the second quarter and shot 48.9% (23-for-47) from the field in the win.

Four players scored in double figures for Pacific Lutheran, including a game-high 21 points from Madison Salisbury. She was joined in double figures by Katie Taylor (14 points), Kristin Sturdivan (12 points) and a double double effort by Emma Janousek (10 points, 10 rebounds).

The game was tied on three occasions in the opening quarter as the Lutes went ahead on back-to-back baskets by Anna Hurd and Salisbury for an early 13-9 lead. Pacific Lutheran managed to remain in front for the remainder of the contest. PLU scored the first 11 points of the second quarter to build a lead as large as 15 in the quarter. The Lutes managed to stretch the lead to as much as 21 in the third quarter but there was still plenty of fight on the Boxer roster.

Trailing by 18, 52-34 with 9:41 left, the Boxers went on a 10-2 spurt to cut the deficit to 10 as Carolan hit a 3-pointer with 5:06 to play. Down the stretch, Pacific managed to make it a seven-point contest on a pair of occasions including the final margin. Elliott scored 11 of her 15 and Carolan added nine of her 16 to lead the Boxers.

Next, Pacific will remain on the road to face Linfield on Friday, Jan. 18 at 6 p.m. in McMinnville.
