Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Another Narrow Defeat for Pacific Women's Basketball in 51-49 Loss to WIllamette

The last three games for the Pacific University women's basketball have been decided by a combined nine points. Despite the narrow margin, all three have been defeats including a 51-49 loss to Willamette on Tuesday night at the Stoller Center.

The Boxers (6-8, 0-5 NWC) were held to a season-low 26.3% (15-for-57) shooting effort from the field in the loss. Pacific senior Charli Elliott had her third double double of the season, scoring 12 points and grabbing 13 rebounds in the loss. She was joined in double figures by senior Liana Tanaka, who added 11 and junior Ashley Jones, who had 10.

The Bearcats (6-8, 1-4 NWC) shot 40.4% (19-for-47) from the field and were also able to land three players in double figures including Kassin Hopkins, who came off the bench for a game-high 17. Like the Boxers, Willamette also had a player with a double double – Brittany Kochenderfer – with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds and Amanda Carpenter added 11 points.

The matchup featured nine lead changes and score tied eight more times. The Boxers held a one-point lead, 49-48, when Megan Wesel made one of two free throws after a clutch offensive rebound with 2:33 to go. The Bearcats, on their next possession, tied the game at 48 when Elizabeth Logsdon made one of two free throws.

Pacific looked to regain the lead on its next possession but a 3-point attempt came up short, a put-back attempt on a layup fell short, then a shot clock violation on the Boxers kept the home team off the scoreboard and the game tied at 48.

Following a timeout, the Bearcats scored what proved to be the game-winning basket on a layup by Logsdon with :18 left. The Boxers had a pair of opportunities that came up short in the closing seconds that allowed the visitors to come away with the victory.

The contest saw the Bearcats lead for 20:39 compared to just 10:39 for the Boxers, plus the contest was tied for 8:39. Defensively, Pacific forced 19 turnovers that led to 13 Boxer points.

The Boxers will look to bounce back as they travel to Pacific Lutheran on Saturday at 4 p.m. in Parkland. The Lutes edged Willamette by a 61-53 margin in Parkland on Saturday.
