Boxers Come Up Short in 77-70 Loss to Cal Lutheran

A 13-3 spurt to start the second quarter sparked visiting Cal Lutheran to a 77-70 win over the Pacific University women's basketball on Monday afternoon.

The Boxers (2-1), who were seeking their first 3-0 start since 2012-13, were led by a game-high 20 points from freshman Rilee Price (Brea, Calif.) – 13 of which came in the first half. Price also had a team-high eight rebounds to go along with four assists. Plus, junior Camy Aguinaldo had 19 points and five assists, junior Courtney Carolan added 11 and freshman Madison Cabardo scored 10 in the loss.  
 
The Regals (1-3) were able to land five players in double figures in the win for the first victory for head coach Kelli DiMuro. Mackenzy Iwahashi led CLU with 18 points, plus Cameron Mallory added a double double with 13 ponts and a game-high 15 rebounds. Jade Jordan (12 points), Alexis Rodriguez (13 points) and Jozie Tingerman (10 points) all contributed to the winning efforts.

Pacific overcame an early 4-0 deficit and took its first lead of the day when Price hit a 3-pointer that put the host Boxers ahead 13-10 with 3:40 left in the opening quarter. Later in the quarter, the Boxers managed to extend its lead to as much as seven in the quarter.
 
The Regals scored a pair of baskets just before the end of the quarter, trailing 18-15 after first 10 minutes. The two teams traded the lead in the opening minute of the second quarter until back-to-back 3-pointers by Rodriguez and Mallory put the visitors ahead for the remainder of the contest. Pacific scored the final five points of the half to cut the halftime deficit to 37-31. It was the first time in the young season that the Boxers had trailed at the intermission.
 
Carolan brought the Boxers within three, 44-41, when she made a layup with 5:45 left in the third quarter. Again, CLU had an answer, this time it was an 11-0 run that put the visitors up by double digits for the remainder of the quarter.
 
The Boxers were not going to go away easy as they scored the first seven points of the final quarter, culminating in a 3-point play by Price with 7:46 left in the fourth quarter as Pacific trailed 57-53. Twice, later in the quarter, the Boxers cut the deficit to two including 65-63 when Carolan made a layup with 1:41 left. The Regals answered the threat as Mallory hit a 3-pointer to make it a two-possession game. CLU sealed the game, making its final six free throws for the win.
