Boxers Win Season Opener

The second season of the Justin Lunt era began with a 115-111 overtime win for the Pacific University men's basketball team over host UC Santa Cruz on Friday afternoon.

The Boxers (1-0) landed four players in double figures including senior Marcus Wallace, who scored a team-high 24 points on the strength of four 3-pointers. The four Boxers in double figures for Pacific is the 21st time in 26 contests of the Lunt era. 
 
For Wallace, who was named honorable mention all-NWC in 2018-29, went over the 20-point mark for the 13th time of his brief career. ​He was joined in double figures by sophomore John Rigatti (16 points) – to tie a career high, senior Davis Holly (14 points), senior Andy Isokpehi (12 points) and freshman Devin Fortune (10 points).
 
The Banana Slugs (0-1) were led by a double double by Patrick Ramos, who had a game-high 25 points and 10 rebounds. Also in double figures were Haakon Ullrich (19 points), Avri Finch (17 points), Treyson Keating (14 points) and Ryan Silva (10 points).
 
Rigatti made a pair of free throws to put the visiting Boxers ahead by three, 102-99, with 10 seconds left in regulations. After a near five-second call forced by the aggressive Pacific defense, the host Banana Slugs forced overtime when Ryan Silva hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to tie the contest at 102.
 
The two teams went back and forth in the extra period until the Boxers' sophomore Terrence Gilder hit a jumper with shot clock winding down with :04 left in the extra session. The field goal and a pair of Wallace free throws sealed the victory for Pacific, who won its season opener for its third-straight year.

Next, Pacific will face Johnson & Wales on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Santa Cruz.
