The Pacific University women's basketball team overcame a two-point deficit following the first quarter to outscore host UC Santa Cruz by a 24-14 margin en route to a 67-59 win on Saturday night.
The Boxers (5-3) landed four players in double figures including
Camy Aguinaldo (22 points),
Brilie Kovaloff (pictured; 13 points),
Rilee Price (11 points) and
Courtney Carolan (11 points) in the win. The Pacific defense forced 26 UCSC turnovers, turning that into 21 points.
The Banana Slugs (5-8) were led by a 20-point effort from Ashley Kowack, who went 7-for-20 from the field including 3-for-9 effort from beyond the 3-point line. She was joined in double figures by Emily Mitchell, who had 13 points in the loss.
After seeing the Boxers score the first six points of the game, UC Santa Cruz scored the next 10 points on its way to a 13-11 lead through the first 10 minutes. The second quarter saw the Boxers' Aguinaldo score the first five points to spark Pacific, who went on a decisive 8-2 run in the second quarter. Pacific ended the quarter with the final five points, including a 3-pointer by Carolan.
A 9-2 run in the third quarter by the visiting Boxers stretched the lead to double digits as Pacific would go on to the victory.
Pacific will look to end 2019 with a win as they face the University of Dubuque on Sunday at 1 p.m. in its final game of the New Year's Classic. The game location has been moved from Santa Cruz, Calif. to Cabrillo College in Aptos, Calif.
