Davis Holly (Bend, Ore.) scored a career-high 37 points to lead the Pacific University men's basketball team to a 127-118 win over Pacific Lutheran on Friday night at the Stoller Center. The 37 points by Holly are the most by a Pacific player since Garold Howe poured in 40 against the Lutes on January 26, 2008.
Â
Pacific (10-13, 4-10 NWC) led for nearly the entire game, holding the advantage for 37:44 in the win. Holly was joined in double figures by
Marcus Wallace (19 points),
Andy Isokpehi (17 points),
Jared Cattell (16 points) and
Gage Shelmidine (16 points).
Â
Pacific Lutheran (7-14, 4-9 NWC) was led by its own 37-point scoring effort from Leighton Kingma, who knocked down seven 3-pointers for the Lutes. Along with Kingma in double figures was Jordan Thomas, who had a double double (27 points), Nassenn Guiterez-Orozco (19 points) and Kelton Williams (18 points). Kingma, Thomas and Guiterez-Orozco each pulled down double digit rebounds to complement their scoring efforts to record double doubles in the loss for Pacific Lutheran.
The two teams were tied twice in the first five minutes before a 16-6 run put the Boxers ahead of double digits for the remainder of the half. Pacific held a 64-49 lead at the intermission on the strength of 13 3-pointers including five by Holly, who had 19 at the break.
Â
A resilient PLU squad saw the Lutes shoot 73% (27-for-37) from the field and rally from a deficit as large as 17 and make it a one-point game with 7:18 left to play. The Boxers answered the threat and managed to build a lead as 11 on six occasions down the stretch. Pacific made 10 of its last 11 free throws to seal the win.
Next, Pacific will host Lewis & Clark on Friday, Feb. 15 at 8 p.m. for the final home games of the 2018-19 season.
