The Pacific University softball swept the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in a non-conference doubleheader, winning game one by a 10-0 margin in five innings and a 6-5 come-from-behind win in the nightcap on Friday in Marshall, Texas.
The Boxers (4-0) start the season with four-straight wins for the third time in four seasons. Pacific senior
Kaitlynn Donaca went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI in game one and a hit and a RBI in the nightcap to lead the Boxers.
Game 1
In game one, Pacific scored twice in the first two innings before a six-run fourth inning gave ample support to the Boxers' starting pitcher
Morgan Masters, who allowed just a third inning single in the win.Â
To get things started, Pacific took advantage of two errors in the top of the first for an early 2-0 lead. With the bases loaded,
Hailey Miller hit a ball that was misplayed by UMHB and allowed a pair of runs for the Boxers.Â
Pacific added to its lead, scoring two more in the second inning on RBI singles by
Becca Bernard and Donaca, respectively. The Boxers plated six runners as 12 batters came to bat in the inning. The big blows were a two-RBI triple by Donaca and senior
Amanda Machado came off the bench to plate two in a pinch-hit single.
Patton pitched a scoreless fifth to preserve the shutout in relief of Masters to close out the win.
Game 2
In game two, the Pacific softball team played behind for the first time on the season. The Boxers overcame a 5-1 deficit to plate a run each in the fourth and fifth and a three-run sixth inning sparked the come-from-behind win.Â
Â
Five-different Boxers had a hit and relievers
Carly Bursch and
Rylee Patton allowed just four hits over the final four innings in the win. Among the Boxers with a hit was sophomore
Montana Vaught, who hit a solo home run in the second inning.
Trailing 5-3, Pacific scored three times in the sixth on just one hit as they capitalized on a pair of UMHB errors. The lone hit was a single by
Kiana Kushiyama. Parton got three strike outs in the final inning to preserve the win
Next, Pacific will face East Texas Baptist in a doubleheader on Saturday in a twinbill at 10 a.m. (PST) | noon (CST).Â
