Boxers Fall On Late Pacific Lutheran Basket, 65-63

Pacific Lutheran would hit a layup with six seconds remaining that would be enough to hold off the Boxers in a 65-63 contest on Friday night.

In the first quarter, Pacific (7-46, 1-13 NWC) would get off to a slow start finding themselves down to the Lutes (13-8, 6-7 NWC) 15-7.

The Boxers would then own the second quarter outscoring the Lutes 21-9. Liana Tanaka who scored nine in that quarter alone would lead Pacific. The Boxers went on a 15-2 run in the final seven minutes of the quarter, capped by an Ashley Jones three-pointer.

In the second half, Shelby Holman and Megan Wesel would lead the charge with seven and eight points each.

Quarter three saw the Boxers get out to a 32-24 lead thanks to four straight points from Jones. From there the Lutes began to fight back. After Alexa Hinkley made two free throws, the Boxers held a 45-41 lead going into the final quarter.

The Boxers and Lutes kept battling until just over a minute remained on the clock when the game became tied at 61.

Tanaka would get fouled and make two free throws giving the Boxers a 63-61 lead. The Lutes would answer tying the game on a layup with 48 ticks left.

Pacific Lutheran would get the ball again with 22 seconds remaining and hit he eventual game-winning layup with just six seconds left. The Boxers final shot attempt went off the glass and out.

Courtney Carolan and Jones led the Boxers with 12 points each and Tanaka was right behind with 11 of her own. Jones also added six rebounds and Carolan added three steals.

As a team the Boxers shot a season high 24 free throws and made a season high 21 of them. The 87.5 percent was the best since the Boxers went 15-16 (93 percent) at Whitman in November.
