Pacific Drops Pair at Cactus Classic Tournament

The Pacific University dropped a pair games at the Cactus Classic Tournament, losing 5-3 to Chapman and 17-1 to La Verne on Saturday in Tucson, Arizona.

The Boxers (2-3) had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the ninth in the opening game before back-to-back strikeouts ended the comeback hopes in game one. Pacific had five hits in the loss to the Panthers including a solo home run by Ryan Krout.

The Panthers (3-0) overcame a 3-1 deficit to plate three in the fourth and an insurance run in the seventh for the win. Chapman had nine hits against Pacific pitchers Trevor Quinn and Liam Cammall – three of them off the bat of Henry Zeisle in the win.

Down 1-0 in the top of the second, Krout tied the game on a solo home run to get things started for the Pacific offense. Then, in the third inning, Aaron Alexander tripled down the right-field line to start the inning. Next, with one out, Tanner Johnson reached base on a walk and swiped second to put two runners in scoring position. The Boxers pushed two across on a Chapman miscue on a ball hit by Krout that put the Boxers ahead 3-1.

The Panthers regained the lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs without a hit as they took advantage of three walks and a pair of sacrifice flies. Then, they added an insurance run in the seventh on a ground out.

The second game of the day saw La Verne score 12 runs in the third inning en route to the 17-1 win over the Boxers.

Pacific got its only run in the second inning as Krout sparked the Boxer offense with a one out double. Then, he came in to score when the Leopards misplayed a ball hit by Jordan Hara.

Krout had a pair of hits for the Boxers and nine-different players for La Verne had a hit including a game-high, four-hit effort from Ryan Galan, who also scored four times.

The Boxers will look to return to the win column in its final game of the weekend when they face Sul Ross State on Sunday at 10 a.m.
