Pacific Loses Series Finale to Whitworth, 12-2

The Pacific University baseball team dropped a 12-2 decision to Whitworth in the series finale at Chuck Bafaro Stadium on Sunday.

The Boxers (12-6, 6-3 NWC) found themselves behind six through the first four innings before getting on the scoreboard in the fifth inning to spark the offense. Seven-different Boxers had a hit including a pair by Derek Legeza in the loss. Starting pitcher Sam Lawrence was handed his first loss of the season, falling to 4-1 in the loss.

The Pirates (7-9, 4-2 NWC) managed 16 hits including three each from Nicholas Nerud, Tyler Poffernroth and Cody Simmons in the win. Whitworth starting pitcher Ryan Kingma allowed just four hits, two runs (both earned) and struck out three in the win to improve to 3-2.

Facing a 6-0 deficit in the fifth inning, the Boxers' Hayden Wright got aboard on a walk. Then, with two out, Derek Legeza got his first of two hits to put runners on first and second for Chase Anderson. The sophomore shortstop cut the deficit to 6-2 when he doubled in the gap between left and center field, scoring Legeza and Wright.

Whitworth came back with four runs in its half of the inning and two more in the sixth for the final margin.

The Boxers will remain home for its next three-game series as they will host Whitman. The series gets underway on Saturday with a doubleheader at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
