The Pacific University men's tennis team posted an 8-1 win over host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday at the Sprinker Rec Center in Tacoma.
The Boxers (6-1, 2-1 NWC), who are playing three matches in two days, managed to lose just one match and overcome a pair of first set losses to pick up wins at #4 and #5 singles.
The Lutes (3-5, 0-3 NWC) got its lone win on the day when the doubles team of Michael Campbell/Marcus Lee edged the Pacific tandem of
Koby Murata and
Rayden Murata in a tiebreaker at #1 doubles. Campbell/Lee won by a 10-3 margin in the tiebreaker for the 8-7 win.
Pacific won the other two doubles matches, winning at #2 doubles –
Joey Hu and
Reyn Miyagawa were 8-1 winners and #3 doubles team of
Jonathan Chung and
Sean Murphy recorded an 8-2 win.
Holding a 2-1 lead after doubles, Boxers' head coach
Pete Yellico chose to go with a singles lineup filled with freshmen and sophomores. "It was a solid performance by all of our young guys," said Yellico. "We came out on top of all six singles matches, showing our extreme depth."
Pacific swept the first three singles matches, securing the victory. Among the winners were
Reyn Miyagawa (#1 singles; 7-5, 6-2),
Jonathan Chung (#2 singles; 7-5, 6-0) and
Garret Katayama (#3 singles, 6-1, 6-3). The Boxers continued its winning ways with wins at #4 singles with a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 win by
Joey Balleweg, #5 singles by
Cooper Rich with a 4-6, 7-6 (10-5), 1-0 (10-7) victory and #6 singles by
Reece Parr with a 6-2, 6-1 win.
The weekend will continue as Pacific with matchups on Sunday against Puget Sound and NCAA Division I Seattle University at the Sandpoint Tennis Club in Seattle, Washington.
