A two-RBI single by Cooper Larson in the top of the seventh for Lewis & Clark was just enough to lead the visiting Pioneers to a 2-1 non-conference win over the Pacific University baseball team on Tuesday night at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
Larson ended a scoreless contest in the seventh inning, singling to right-center field to score Matt Donovan and Ryan Ericksen, who each had walked earlier in the inning.
Pacific (17-10) also got its lone run in the seventh inning after
Chase Anderson doubled to left-center field to start the inning. The sophomore advanced to third on a wild pitch; then after a strikeout, the speedy shortstop hustled home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to one. An
Ian Blair walk put the tying run aboard before the Pioneers picked up a double play to erase the threat.
The game saw the Pioneers leave 12 runners on base and the Boxers strand 11. In the absence of clutch hitting, four Lewis & Clark pitchers combined to strike out nine Boxers and for Pacific five pitchers came together for eight strikeouts. Among the pitchers for Pacific was
Ryan Carle, who was the tough-luck loser in the contest. He falls to 0-1 on the season. For Lewis & Clark, Nat Richman pitched 2.2 innings of two hit and recorded five strikeouts for the win before leaving with an injury in the seventh. Austin Contiff pitched the ninth, surrendering a
Ryan Krout double for the save.
Next, Pacific will travel to Salem for a three-game series against Willamette (11-10, 8-7 NWC), who was picked to finish second in the Northwest Conference.
